Do Mass intentions need to be announced?

When a priest celebrates Mass each day, he offers the Holy Sacrifice for a particular person or intention. While it is a common practice in some places to have the intention announced at the Mass, there is no requirement from the Church to do so. It should be remembered that the Mass intention refers above all to the intention of the celebrating priest who took upon himself the commitment to celebrate for a specific intention when he accepted a stipend. What matters is the priest's personal awareness that the Mass is being offered for one or more people, and that he actually offers the Mass for them.

In many places Mass intentions are simply published in the parish Newsletter and displayed on the notice board. Please be assured by the knowledge that the Mass which has been offered for the living or dead is of infinitely more value than any announcement of the intention.
