Music at Sunday Mass

As I mentioned in my letter to the parish when I first arrived, it was my desire to gather those who are interested in contributing to the music for the liturgy at the 10.30am Mass at St Catherine’s. I am very grateful to the choir and thank them for their continued contribution. I hope that by gathering others we can further enhance the liturgy as the worship of God in our parish. To that end I would like to invite anyone who can play the organ and those interested in singing to meet with me and members of the choir after the 10.30am Mass at St Catherine’s on Sunday 13th September. You don’t have to commit to anything at that meeting but I would just like to get a sense of who might be interested and willing.

Pope Leo in his recent audience spoke on the importance of sacred music saying: “Singing also fosters communion. It contributes to the unity of hearts, overcoming differences between people and bringing everyone together in praise of God through the symphony of voices. Thus, it becomes an epiphany of the Church, a tangible manifestation of the communion that belongs to her very nature.”

The liturgy is the place where we find that unity by the diversity of what each can contribute and where we can delve into the depths of the Church’s treasure of liturgical and sacred music.
